B.1. Introduction to Jainism

An Interactive Study Guide for Section B.1

What is Jainism?

Jainism is the path shown by the Jinas (Victors). A Jina is one who has conquered their inner passions. Let's explore the key definitions.

Who is a Jina?

A Jina is a victor over their inner passions (Kashäy):

  • • Krodh (Anger)
  • • Män (Ego)
  • • Mäyä (Deceit)
  • • Lobh (Greed)

Jinas are also called Tirthankars or Arihants.

Who is a Tirthankar?

A Tirthankar is a special Jina who establishes the four-fold Jain order:

  • • Sädhu (Monks)
  • • Sädhvi (Nuns)
  • • Shrävak (Male lay followers)
  • • Shrävikä (Female lay followers)

There are 24 Tirthankars in each half time cycle.

The Concept of God in Jainism

  • God is a Perfected Soul: Every soul in its purest form (a Siddha) is a God. They are knowers and observers, but not doers.
  • No Creator God: Jains do not believe in a God who creates, preserves, or destroys the universe.
  • Self-Reliance: Every soul creates its own destiny and is capable of becoming God by removing all karma.
